I’ve wanted to see this for a number of years and I finally managed to see it on Monday 7th September, and it didn’t disappoint!
The story of Wicked centres around Elphaba who is seen as the fiery girl with green skin who then grows up to become the Wicked Witch of the West. Galinda, the beautiful squeaky clean blonde girl who subsequently grows up to become Glinda the Good Witch of The South.
Elphaba played by Emma Hatton had an amazing vocal range that she managed to showcase throughout the show. The long awaited ‘For Good’ and ‘Defying Gravity’ were as expected, show stopping songs which pushed the energy of the show higher than many West End musicals! Glinda played by Savannah Stevenson was my favourite character from this show. I really enjoyed the fun she brought to the show amongst a very clear, crisp and finely attuned vocal ability to match.
The staging of this show was amazing. I’m very much a ‘set person’ and there are very few shows that have as many changes and movement to their set. From the dragon that breathes smoke to the audience below to the wizards invention and lots of changes in-between. This really was a set lovers dream! The lighting was fantastic too, the use of lighting throughout the set had been thought out very well and encompassed and was incorporated into all of the set. This could be seen from downstage to upstage.
I enjoyed everything about this show – the set, music, lighting, staging, costumes, casting to name but a few. This is a show that has been going since 2006 and it still very much in it’s prime. I can see this continuing for a good few years yet and it is clear to see why it has such a huge fan base and people that return many times to see the show. I will definitely come back and see it again, perhaps with a different cast to see how the show develops and anything I may’ve missed from getting caught up in the atmosphere on Monday. Great work to all cast, crew and all involved – fab show! Don’t miss it.
A well deserved 4.5 stars!
Wicked is at the Victoria Apollo Theatre and has been running since 2006 and has very recently announced it is extending the booking period until November 2016.
