Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, 2nd Birthday Gala, Aldwych Theatre, London

Beautiful celebrated the beginning of it’s third year on Thursday 9th February, 2017 as well as wishing Carole King a very Happy 75th Birthday with a special gala night. There were many VIPs including Fleur East, Tony Christie, Larry Lamb, Sinitta, Heidi Range, Ainsley Harriot and Jason Manford to name but a few!

Beautiful tells the story of Carole King’s life from being a young schoolgirl with big dreams to making it big with classic hits including ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘The Locomotion’, ‘Natural Woman’ and ‘On Broadway’. It also shares her relationship with husband and songwriting partner, Gerry Goffin and their close friendship with Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann.

This was my third time seeing the production and the show has recently undergone a cast change, so I was keen to see how the new cast performed, as well as seeing the jaw-dropping performance of Cassidy Janson who plays Carole, once again.

The recent cast change has brought a fresher feel to the show, with many new faces in the cast including Matthew Seadon-Young (Gerry Goffin) and Barbara Brennan (Genie Klein) who portrayed the role of Kings mother perfectly!

Ian McIntosh (Barry Mann) and Lorna Want (Cynthia Weil) remain in their roles and both had fantastic performances. Lorna captures the comedic charm of Weil and her strong vocals let the audience warm to her character quickly. Having seen Lorna several times in this role, her performance is a particular favourite.

After the show a meet and greet followed and the celebrity guests joined the cast on stage. The evening celebrations continued in the dress circle bar, where everybody mingled and raised a glass to the fabulous show and to wish it all the very best for its third year at the Aldwych Theatre.

Happy Birthday Beautiful – I look forward to seeing you again very soon!

The show is playing at The Aldwych Theatre, London and tickets for performances can be purchased here.
